The beautiful resort of Puerto Rico is located in southern Gran Canaria. Northwest of the vibrant Maspalomas resort. This destination is a big hit with families who head here for the best sunshine on the island.
Puerto Rico is far enough away from the nightlife and noise of the nearby resorts but close enough if you want to experience that also. Like many holiday resorts in Gran Canaria and indeed Spain, Puerto Rico was once a quiet fishing village. The tourism boom transformed this area into a top holiday resort. This area boasts a lovely sandy beach, two marinas and plenty of shops in the town centre.
This part of Gran Canaria is particularly rugged due to it’s volcanic origin. Mountains and cliffs line the coastline which lead down to the beach and the two small marinas.
Main Beach of Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria
The beach at Puerto Rico is man made with sand from the Sahara Desert. This beach is 280 metres in length and can get very crowded during the peak season. The bay that surrounds the beach keeps the water calm and ideal for swimming. As you can see from the image above, the water transforms from crystal clear to a beautiful shade of turquoise as it becomes deeper.

The bay and beach areas are overlooked by mountains on both sides. Here you will find some of the leading hotels on the island providing accommodation. A short distance from the beach there is a good selection of great bars and restaurants.
The Town Centre & Commercial Centres
The town centre of Puerto Rico contains many varying bars and restaurants for all tastes. There are many shopping centres found in the commercial centres. This is also true for much of the local nightlife which is far less noisy than Playa del Ingles and other local resorts. For those that fancy a change from swimming in the Sea can find the public swimming pool in town also.
Fishing charters are particularly popular for those that enjoy deep Sea fishing. Cavalier Blue Marlin is one of the best charter companies for big game fishing. The main marina has it’s own fishing club also which has enjoy a lot of success on the world stage.
Climate in Puerto Rico
The Weather in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria is mild to hot all year round. The temperature rarely dropping below 17 Celsius. The average yearly temperature is much the same as most of the Canary Islands. Here you can always expect mild winters and hot summers.
The hottest months here are August and September when the average temperature is 24 Celsius. The coldest months are between December – April when the average temperature is between 17 – 19 Celsius.
Most of the annual rainfall arrives between the months of November – February. There is hardly any rainfall between the months of May – August. The Sea temperature rarely drops below 19 Celsius in the colder months. This then peaks at 23 Celsius during the hotter months.
