With some of the finest playas in the Canaries on this island there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Below are some things you can experience when visiting the beaches here.
The Top Lanzarote Beaches
In the extreme south of the island there are some fantastic beaches. Especially in the resorts of Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen. On the eastern coast north of Arrecife airport there are more wonderful beaches. Costa Teguise is a good example with many more in the northern parts of the island.
Papagayo Beach, Lanzarote
Papagayo Beach is the most beautiful of all the Lanzarote beaches. Shaped like a crescent moon and surrounded by cliffs, this beach is one of the top attractions on the island. Papagayo lies on the southern tip of the island, east of Playa Blanca. Papagayo is actually a series of beaches and coves with the main beach the last of the series.
Unless arriving by foot, you will have to pay to arrive either by the dirt track or the water taxi. Driving will take you 15 minutes from Playa Blanca via the dirt track. Driving will cost you 3 € which includes parking near the beach.
The Princesa Yaiza water taxi will cost you 15 € for a return ticket from Playa Blanca. From this super beach you will be able to see the tropical Isla de Lobos (Wolf Island). You also have a view of Fuerteventura, located south of Lanzarote.
Playa Blanca
Number two on our list of best Lanzarote beaches is Playa Blanca Beach. The town of Playa Blanca is the southernmost in Lanzarote. This is also the newest resort on the island.
This popular resort is located 45 km from Arrecife airport. It was also the first resort to have a dedicated bus service. Playa Blanca beach (White beach) is one of the smallest beaches in the town. It’s still a favourite due to everything else you have going on here. The water is calm on the southern coast. This makes the clear turquoise water ideal for diving and swimming.
This beach is equipped with showers and hammock and parasol rental services. The pretty promenade is lined with bars and restaurants. The promenade also allows access to several other local beaches.
Playa Grande, Puerto del Carmen
Playa Grande or “Big Beach” is the main beach in Puerto del Carmen which gets it’s name because of it’s size. Although not the biggest beach in Lanzarote, Playa Grande still has a length of almost 1200 metres. The disabled and general beach facilities are among the best of any of the Lanzarote beaches.
The promenade here has more bars, shops and restaurants than any other beach on the island. The water here like much of the southern areas is calm. There are still lifeguards in attendance.
Playa Grande is the best known urban beach in Lanzarote so expect this beach to be busy when you visit. Rental services here include sunbeds and parasol hire.
Costa Teguise Beaches
There are actually 4 magnificent beaches in Costa Teguise to choose from. The most popular and best located being Playa Cucharas (Spoons Beach). Playa Cucharas is popular with both sunbathers and the windsurfers. A section of the beach is often cordoned off for windsurfing.
The main Costa Teguise Beach is not the biggest but it’s one of the busiest. Especially along the eastern coast of Lanzarote. Rentals of parasols and sunbeds among other facilities are available. The restaurants and bars are a few minutes walk away. There are four other beaches in Costa Teguise. These include Playa Jablillo, Los Charcos, Playa Bastian and Playa Ancla.
Lanzasurf
Lanzasurf offer some excellent opportunities to learn how to surf. They can either teach you to surf or improve your surfing technique. They also offer many fitness programs. such as yoga or fitness training. Lanzasurf even offer Spanish courses if you would like to improve your Spanish.
The surfing courses include packages for 1 day, 3 days and 5 days with private lessons available also. You can buy a day course from as little as 55 euros or hire a board for 15 euros per day.
Playa de los Pocillos
Playa de los Pocillos is another beautiful beach which lies to the east of Puerto del Carmen. This super beach is one of the best beaches in this part of Lanzarote and indeed the island. Playa de los Pocillos beach has a length of over 1200 metres and an average width of 150 metres.
This is actually one of the quieter parts of the island away from the busier resorts. Autumn is a great time to visit here, especially around October when the weather is hot still but tourism is less.
Playa de los Pocillos is equipped with excellent facilities and disabled access. It has easy access to the beautiful promenade and surrounding bars and restaurants. The water is particularly calm in this part of the island. Nonetheless, there are lifeguards keeping a close eye on proceedings.
Famara Beach
Playa Famara lies in the northwest of the island. This beach is among the most popular for surfing and windsurfing. Famara beach is a vast bay that is surrounded by cliffs and little else apart from the Atlantic Ocean.
The bungalows built above Famara are largely occupied by Scandinavian expats. Many of which are Norwegian. The village of La Caleta de Farmara is where you can find the bars and restaurants.
This beach is more suited to those who enjoy water sports. Famara attracts many professionals to train and practice. Many come here for sports but Famara is worth a visit for it’s spectacular beauty alone.
